Nuremberg
Charming Town with Famous Christmas Market
Situated in the Bavarian administrative region of Franconia, the town has a population of about 500
000.
This charming town is the birth place of gastronomic specialities like "Nuremberger
Lebkuchen" (gingerbread) and
"Nuremberger Rostbratwürste". Among other things,
they are offered at world-famous "Nuremberger Christkindlesmarkt" (christmas
market) which is placed on the market in front of the Frauenirche. Taking place in the weeks before
christmas, it attracts about 2 million visitors each year. An age-old custom still
takes place
at the opening: the Nuremberger Christkind (christ child) speaks from the balcony of the church to
the Nuremberger people.
The Christkind gets elected every two years and is played by a
Nuremberger woman at the age from 16 to 19.
The speech always starts with:
"Ihr
Herrn und Frau'n, die Ihr einst Kinder wart, Ihr Kleinen, am Beginn der Lebensfahrt,
Ein jeder,
der sich heute freut und morgen wieder plagt: Hört alle zu, was Euch das Christkind sagt!
..."
("All you men and women, who once have been children, all you children, at
the beginning of your life,
everybody, who is happy today and in sorrow tomorrow: listen to what
the Christ Child has to say...")
